The Friends of Leo J. Martin Skiing (FOLJMS) is a nonprofit organization that works to promote and enhance opportunities for cross country skiing in the Greater Boston area, and to build, broaden, and diversify the community of cross country skiers. Working in collaboration with DCR and other partners, FOLJMS is dedicated to improving cross country skiing access, opportunity, and experience, particularly at the Leo J. Martin facility in Weston, MA. (FOLJMS is the “doing business as” name of the Boston Area Nordic Ski Association – BANSA).
We achieve this through:
Venue Capital and Operating Improvements
FOLJMS has worked with our members, with DCR, and with CRR on several capital improvements to Leo J. Martin:
- More and better night lighting
- Construction of “Mt. FOLJMS” near fairway 6 to add a “B climb” to the course
- More and better snowmaking and grooming equipment
- New pump for snowmaking
- Improved and longer term operational contracts for CRR
Community Engagement & Education
FOLJMS supports cross country ski programming that expands access to skiing for children and adults in partnership with the Boston Boys & Girls Club and Youth Enrichment Services (YES). We also support adaptive skiing programs in partnership with the DCR and with the New England Nordic Ski Association (NENSA). Many of our members volunteer with these programs.
We advocate on behalf of the cross country skiing community to ensure that the Leo J. Martin is maintained and operated in a manner that advances cross country skiing conditions and access by collaborating and working with partner organizations, legislators, and donors.
In the coming two years we are pursuing:
- More and better grooming equipment
- New buried pipe and pumping system
- Designated trail access from MBTA to LJM
